Floyd Mayweather Jr.: Mayweather turned in a typical performance on Saturday in Las Vegas: all-but-impenetrable defense, ridiculously quick punches landed at a high percentage rate and an embarrassed opponent in the end. Two things made his victory over Shane Mosley special. One, he faced some adversity in the second round and stared it down. He survived a monstrous right that rocked him and then fired right back, demonstrating to Mosley and the crowd that he’s tougher than we might’ve though. And, two, he didn’t dominate just any opponent. He embarrassed the No. 3 fighter in the world pound for pound, a fighter deemed to have a skill set similar to his, a legitimate welterweight. To say Mayweather is special is an understatement. The man is amazing.

BIGGEST LOSER

Shane Mosley: Mosley is anything but a loser. He’s had a wonderful career and he’s one of the best-liked boxers in the game, his steroid admission aside. However, most people expected more from him on Saturday. Not many believed he would win but it seemed likely that he would at least go down swinging, which would’ve fit his fiery boxing personality. Instead, he was strangely reluctant to let his hands go with any passion. I expected him to come out firing when it became apparent that he couldn’t outbox his foe. I thought, “OK, now the warrior I’ve grown to admire will pull out all stops and attack Mayweather with all his might.” It never happened. Maybe Mayweather knocked the fight out of him. Maybe he was showing his age, 38. Whatever the reason, we didn’t see the Shane Mosley who has thrilled his fans for more than 17 years. I don’t know who that guy was.

Mayweather, however, has a chance to at least shush the critics now that he is finally going to face an elite welterweight in champion Shane Mosley, whom he meets in the year's biggest fight so far on Saturday night (HBO PPV, $54.95, 9 ET) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

"He had to fight somebody if he wanted to be considered the best," said Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs), a two-time welterweight champion, three-division champion and pound-for-pound list stalwart.

Mayweather said the criticism is unfounded. He said it's not his fault he is so dominant that he makes the wins look easy.

"When I fight guys who they say will give me a tough fight, I can't help that the fight is so one-sided the fight is boring. That's not my fault," he said. "It's just that I'm that good. That's not my fault. You got some fighters that's talented. You got some fighters that are God-gifted. You got some athletes that's God-gifted. I just happen to be one of those athletes that's God-gifted. That's no different than Kobe Bryant or LeBron James."

When Mayweather was a junior lightweight, he beat the best and he did it easily in dominant TKO victories against Genaro Hernandez and Diego "Chico" Corrales.

In Mayweather's first fight at lightweight, he won the title by taking a tight decision from the No. 1 guy, champion Jose Luis Castillo. Then he outpointed Castillo again in a rematch.

But since then, it's hard to look at Mayweather's résumé and find that he has faced the best in his division.

At junior welterweight, Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) didn't fight the top opponents, leaving the division after an expected one-sided thrashing of Arturo Gatti in mid-2005 to claim a belt he never defended.

When he arrived at welterweight in late 2005, the division was stocked with talented potential opponents: Mosley, Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto and later Paul Williams and Pacquiao, just to name a few.

As serious as the fighters sound, it hasn't stoked great interest, despite their legendary names. Ticket sales are weak, and Wednesday's final news conference was sparsely attended. A fight that once would have drawn media from every corner of the country had so few reporters that the fighters easily could have done one-on-one interviews with all who wanted their time.

When asked directly why people should buy a fight that has been so thoroughly trashed by fans and media, Jones was direct.

"Because we've laid down our hard-earned lives to put on two stellar careers over that 17-year period [since the first fight]," Jones said. "So why not lay down your hard-earned money to watch two guys who put their hard-earned lives on the line to entertain you people for 17 years. They understand who we are. They know who we are. They've watched us for years. We've entertained them for years, so why not give back to us and let us go at it one more time for the ages?"

The promoters, Hopkins' Golden Boy and Jones' Square Ring, are doing their best to pump up the event and have resorted to perhaps a bit of desperation in their efforts to sell pay-per-view, emphasizing that the main event won't begin until after the completion of the second NCAA Final Four game between Duke and West Virginia. Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer also pounded home the fact that despite HBO's limited involvement in the fight, strictly as a distributor, there won't be a replay next week.

It has come to this for two of boxing's biggest names, in part because there is so much concern about Jones continuing to fight.

To add insult to possible injury, Jones might not make any money from the fight. Despite the camps saying they have a 50-50 deal -- and 60-40 to the winner if it's a knockout -- do the math. Hopkins' side is supposed to get the first $3.5 million after the expenses are paid. Jones' side would get the next $3.5 million with the rest being split evenly. The problem? The fight might not generate even a first $3.5 million.

Schaefer said he understood the negativity surrounding the fight and, like many, wished it had happened a few years ago. But it didn't, and he's realistic.

"There are people out there who like to miss out on the last chapter, and there are people who don't like to miss out on the last chapter," he said. "Those who like to miss out on the last chapter should just stay at home."

Manny Pacquiao's lopsided unanimous decision against Joshua Clottey generated 700,000 pay-per-view buys and $35.3 million in domestic television revenue, HBO PPV's Mark Taffet said Tuesday.

The pound-for-pound king routed Clottey to retain his welterweight title on March 13 in the first boxing event staged at Jerry Jones' $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Clottey, a native of Ghana living in New York, brought no significant fan base to the fight and was virtually unknown to the masses, so the figures are a credit to Pacquiao's popularity.

"We are extremely pleased with the pay-per-view performance of Pacquiao-Clottey. Fights like this traditionally do not exceed 400,000 buys," Taffet said. "It is a testament to the popularity of Pacquiao and the vitality of the sport, and it gives us great encouragement as we look toward the May 1 Mayweather-Mosley pay-per-view fight."

The breakdown for Pacquiao-Clottey was 350,000 buys from cable homes, 310,000 from satellite homes and 40,000 from telco homes.

Based on his pay-per-view history, Pacquiao, of the Philippines, has become a crossover star in the United States.

In 12 pay-per-view fights, he has generated 6.25 million buys and $320 million in revenue. The bulk of the total has come from his last four fights: Clottey, Miguel Cotto (1.2 million buys), Ricky Hatton (800,000 buys) and Oscar De La Hoya (1.25 million buys).

Chambers enters ring to light rap music, “He looks remarkably unphased,” remarks the TV commentator. Camera pans to Klitschko locker room, Vitali is fastening his robe in the back. The champion pauses and sits back down for about 10 seconds to what looks like ponder the moment. Or pray. Or turn the beast button on. He rises and walks out to the ring to “Can’t Stop” by the Chili Peppers.

During the anthems and introductions, Klitschko has the rock face of a statue but his concentration is so intense. Chambers appears confident.

Round 1: Chambers has spirit to win. Action is lively. Some jabs by the champ penetrate. After the round Steward instructs, “Feint a little more, sooner or later you’ll get to him. He’ll get frustrated when he can’t get inside.” Chambers hears, “Throw to the body and move your head.”

Round 2: Chambers shows strength by throwing Klitschko down, same as he did to Dimitrenko. Klitschko appears annoyed by it and then pierces a right which sends the challenger realing into the ropes. Steward: “Just a matter of time, he can’t get to you. Just keep working the jab. He’s slowing down. You’re doing perfect, not letting him in.”

Round 3: Steward: “Settle down. You’ll catch him. Let’s pick it up a little more.” Chambers hears: “You gotta work. We didn’t come this far to give this guy rounds.”

Round 4: Klitschko dominating and trying to get the big shot in. His arsenal appears limited to get that shot to the target but it’s still a total domination. Commentator: “He doesn’t want to take unnecessary risks.” But why should he? If he knock Chambers out, the critics will then probably raise expectations to want a decapitation or murder.

Round 5: Steward: “Just keep systematically breaking him down. Don’t get over-crazy. I like the right hand.” Chambers hears: “You gotta fight this guy.” How many times have we heard that before? “Stop telling me okay and do it. Let’s do it, let’s work.” Easier said than done my friend. “You worked all this time for this? Just do it, man.”

Round 6: Chambers has no idea what to do but survive. He is in against the ultimate boxing wrecking machine, a perfect synthesis of speed, power and intelligence. He hears: “It’s fuc*** in ridiculous. You gotta fight this guy. What is wrong with you?”

Round 7: Klitschko could do the same job on Frazier, Norton, Shavers, Foreman, any man from history. Perhaps even Ali. You just can’t get to him and must protect from the Steelhammer. The task appears impossible. Everybody tries but fail the same way. Klitschko is a work of art and a human destroyer at the same time. Steward: “Throw more left hooks. Move him around with left hooks. His corner is going crazy. You’re not the big dummy they thought.” Chambers hears the same message everyone hears every round seemingly: “Get out there and fight this guy.”

Round 8: Chambers is a very good technical fighter. Klitschko is making him look a novice. That’s what the great ones can do. “Come on man, wake up in there. Wake up.” (Chambers gets slapped.)

Round 9: A woman in the challengers corner: “You have to fight Edward. Are you listening? Chambers right glove is broken and replaced. Klitschkos power has broken his glove.

Round 10: The action is the same. The hunter is trying to catch the prey who is desperate to survive and avoid slaughter…or worse. Steward is growing impatient though. “Let the shots go, you gotta let punches go. This is another Ibragimov. Just let em go.” Chambers hears: “Move your head.”

Round 11: Klitschko is trying but can’t finish it. He can’t penetrate the running turtle. Steward: “You wait wait wait. You just gotta let the punches go.” Steward sounds annoyed and resigned to another decision win. “He’s gonna run this round. You don’t want another bull**** decision.” Klitschko looks annoyed too, telling his trainer with a tone of irritation, “I’m trying.”

Round 12: Klitschko shows a hunger and urgency which we have never seen before. He is really going after it now. And all the sudden, this time he gets it in the corner in the last 20 seconds. A lead short seemingly normal left hook leaves Chambers limp and looking dead on his front over the low rope. “A stunning finish,” says the TV commentator.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Manny Pacquiao has won a unanimous decision over Joshua Clottey in their welterweight fight, keeping up his reputation as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter.

Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) controlled the fight from the start, throwing mostly body shots because Clottey locked his arms in front of his face. Pacquaio never slowed throwing punches and Clottey (35-4) never got very aggressive. Neither fighter went down.

Two judges scored it 119-109, the other 120-108.

Pacquaio was beloved by the crowd of 50,994 at Cowboys Stadium. There were cheers of "Man-ny! Man-ny!" nearly every round.

Next up for Pacquiao is an election for Congress in his native Philippines. He's also hoping for a megafight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., presuming Mayweather beats Shane Mosley on May 1.

With screaming boxing fans and the plaza doors spotlight open to show the massive video board as a backdrop, Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey weighed in Friday for their Saturday night WBO welterweight title fight.

Manny Pacquiao, the champion, came in at 145¾. Clottey was at 147.

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, said he wasn't concerned about his fighter's weight. Pacquiao averaged about 152 pounds per day during training.

"After he stopped breaks out drinking protein shakes, the weight drops," said Roach, who added his fighter weighed 144 on Friday morning.

The fighters tried to stare each other down after the weigh-in but broke out in laughter.

The weigh-in was attended by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who said this inaugural fight at the stadium is "hopefully one of many."

Promoter Bob Arum said he expects the fight to have at least 1 million pay-per-view buys with the fight shown in more than 80 million homes worldwide.

The event brought out a star-studded crowd which included actor Robert Duvall and former Dallas Cowboys safety Darren Woodson.

Cowboys officials expect 42 former and current members of the team to attend the fight, including former coach Jimmy Johnson and ex-quarterback Troy Aikman.

The fight is nearing a sellout of 45,000, and stadium officials said they will sell standing-room only tickets for $35 each.

The public demand for the fight has been enormous, putting pressure on Arum and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who represents Mayweather, to get a deal done.
Promoters had targeted May 1 for the fight almost from the moment that Pacquiao stopped Cotto. But Pacquiao filed Tuesday to run for Congress in the Philippines and the election will be held on May 10.

Given that, the bout with Mayweather had to be moved up to March 13 or pushed back until September.
Though there were reports that Arum was considering matching Pacquiao with new WBO super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman on March 13 in Dallas, that was a diversionary move and was never serious, the source said.
A survey team from Top Rank will inspect Dallas Cowboys Stadium as a possible venue. The MGM Grand Garden Arena and the New Orleans Superdome are also in the running to host the mega-fight, the source said.

LAS VEGAS – Manny Pacquiao, just after weighing in at 144 pounds for his welterweight title fight against Miguel Cotto, slipped on a pair of custom Nikes. Cotto, who came it at the 145-pound limit, didn’t.
So when the two fighters were squared off in front of a delirious crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, it was Pac-man who appeared to have the slightest of height advantages, staring just a little down his nose at the bare-footed Cotto.
The difference was the shoes, of course. Cotto stands 5-foot-7, Pacquiao is 5-6 by most measurements.

To further the visual allusion, Pacquiao had his pants pulled up high, so his waist line matched Cotto’s, who actually had his pants sagging a bit.
Whether the choice in footwear and pant length was just a coincidence or a planned intimidation tactic is unknown.
Considering Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, rarely misses a chance to play head games in title fights, we’ll go with the latter. If Cotto doesn’t get to enjoy the 28 or so hours between weigh-in and fight knowing he is clearly the bigger man, then that’s a small win for Pacquiao.
This is a fight about size. Or, at least, the prefight hype is about size. Everyone is wondering just how much bigger and stronger Cotto will be than Pacquiao and whether that is enough to offset Pacquiao’s speed and precision advantages.

Then he gets into a ring wearing mitts to train one of his fighters, who range from L.A. ham and eggers to Manny Pacquiao, the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world who takes on Miguel Cotto for the World Boxing Organization welterweight championship Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

It’s then that Roach moves with light feet and quick hands. He demonstrates some of the speed that made him a boxing headliner back in the day (“Crowd Pleasing Veteran,” the Camacho-Roach poster declares.)

Here’s Freddie Roach, moving and bobbing and throwing punches just the way Cotto, a man 20 years his junior, does. He is mimicking the style that he’s watched in endless scouting sessions of past fights, which is how he always prepares. He’s deft enough at it that Pacquiao hasn’t just blossomed into a superstar, but Roach has become the greatest trainer in the game today.

“Once I get in the ring, all the diseases go away,” Roach said. “I don’t shake.”

It’s a startling transformation; a demanding, athletic task seemingly conquering a physically debilitating disease. Where he slows outside the ropes, he comes to life within them, becoming the ultimate example of a man living with, rather than dying from, an ailment.

It’s left Roach confident that the end of his career is nowhere in sight. That he’ll be able to continue to work the mitts for fighters, that he’ll continue his frenetic pace – he works six days a week, often 12-hour days at his Wild Card Boxing Gym in Hollywood, Calif.

And mostly that he’ll continue to not just work championship fights, but develop championship fighters, the way he has with Pacquiao over the last eight years.

“Freddie believes he has 25 more years in his career,” said Roach’s long-time agent, Nick Khan. “We never discuss retiring.”

Roach’s strengths as a trainer are numerous, but two stand out.

One is his dedication to teaching the game. He isn’t just about preparing a fighter for a single fight (although that’s part of it). It’s about long-range construction also.

The second is that through the education process, his blunt honesty and unwavering dedication to the sport creates a trust with his fighters that can’t be shaken. Here’s a guy with a serious disease, pouring everything into them – he has no wife and few outside interests.

One feeds into the other. The more he teaches, the more they trust. The more they trust, the more teachable they become.

It is how a middle-aged guy from suburban Boston and a kid from the streets of General Santos City in the Philippines became so tight.

“The conditions in General Santos City is 50 times worse than any inner city in America,” Khan said. “Manny, coming from there, has a lot of street smarts and I think he recognized what Freddie was about immediately.”

Roach calls the day he met Pacquiao the “luckiest of my life.” At the time, few top trainers wanted anything to do with the fighter.

“Everyone turned him down because he was only 122 pounds, there wasn’t a lot of money at that weight,” Roach said. “I saw a lot of potential in Manny Pacquiao. He was just rough around the edges.

“The first day he came into the gym, the first round we wore the mitts, we connected like we knew each other for years.”

Together they built a near-perfect fighter, one that has helped make both of them rich and famous.

“He’s the master,” Pacquiao said. “I used to call him Coach Freddie, but now he’s just the master; the master of boxing.”

The master refuses to be slowed on Thursday. He isn’t in the ring but working radio row here at the MGM’s media center. This isn’t his comfort zone. After his boxing career ended, Roach was broke and needed work. He worked for a stretch as a telemarketer, which didn’t always go so well, “I’m not a great speaker so I wasn’t a great salesman.”

And that was before he got sick. Now he has to sell the fight, one radio show, one television interview, at a time. He’s become one of the most recognizable faces in the sport due to his series of appearances on HBO’s “24/7” reality show. Roach is earnest, though. He does his job, always, attacking each question like he hadn’t already answered it 100 times this week.

Roach shrugs. He’s not too proud to do what it takes. Post-fighting career he worked for a stretch as a bus boy in Vegas, the same city he once headlined cards. “I think that was humbling,” Khan said.

The one thing that time of his life taught him was financial discipline. He’s notoriously stingy. For years he lived in a spare room at the Wild Card gym. When his friends and family finally convinced him to buy a house, he paid cash for it.

“I don’t buy stuff until I can afford it,” he said. “It’s the best way, I think. The first big pay day I had was [$13,500], in six months it was gone, I was out of money. I said, ‘Where’d it go?’ I said to myself, ‘You know, I never make that mistake again in my life. I’ll always have money.’ ”

All of this rings true for the fighters. They may not know his story, but they sense his humility. They may not understand his disease, but they see the symptoms he overcomes. They may not know the full depth of his dedication, but they see enough to know how much he cares. They recognize that he’s lived it all – the training, the fights, the money, the injuries that linger (his Parkinson’s was brought on by taking too many punches).

They see the shaking hands, the dropped foot when he walks, the tilt of his head. It makes them listen more closely.

He’ll scoff at anyone who thinks the disease affects his present or will limit his future. Training fighters isn’t killing him; it’s keeping him alive and well. There’s no greater therapy, physical or mental, than round after round in the ring, “40 or 50 a day,” he estimates.

“One-hundred percent it’s helped,” he said. “The hand-eye coordination alone. I’m better now than when I was diagnosed in 1992.”

MANILA, Philippines – Former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. simply laughed off the November 14 showdown being cooked up by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum pitting boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.
“It’s like a T-bone steak," he boasted. “They fight for my leftovers."
Mayweather Jr, made the statement during the international media conference for his September 19 fight with Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez.
The 12-round bout serves as Junior’s comeback fight following his unexpected retirement last year. But an injury to his hip he suffered while in training camp forced promoters of the fight – Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather’s own promotional outfit – to move it from its original date of July 18 to September.
But Mayweather Jr. sounded far from an injured fighter the way he answered questions from the media during the conference call.
In part, the former five-time world champion delved on the Pacquiao-Cotto slugfest that has yet to be formally announced since negotiations for a catch weight has yet been agreed upon.
He also blasted Arum as the major cause why a Mayweather-Pacquiao slugfest won’t happen.
Mayweather Jr, called out his former promoter as ‘greedy.’
“Arum had a chance to make the fight," he said. “He wants 50-50. He knows that it’s never going to happen. If Bob Arum didn’t want to be so greedy, it would happen. If Pacquiao really wants to fight me, he just has to say it."
‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd said an even split between him and Pacquiao is not a reality, pointing out that “while it’s a sport, it’s also a business."
Besides, a meeting with Pacquiao is not the biggest fight out there in boxing, according to Mayweather Jr.
“The biggest fight in boxing is Mayweather against anybody."
